Friends in low places?

Relocation! Exciting, scary, stressful, lonely. There are a lot of positives and negatives to a move away from those you know so well. Those you trust and love. Your comfort zone.
In June I made the move to New Hampshire to be near the things I love. The ocean, the mountains, the lakes. Nature! It was exciting. But with the excitement comes change. A new job, a new neighborhood, new city and making new friends.

The last part is not easy. Especially when you work a job by yourself with someone who is developmentally disabled and non verbal. I have to admit that finding friends is not easy. Especially here in New England. But I'm lucky to have some great neighbors whom I love and hang out with here and there. But meeting someone and building a meaningful relationship takes time. And it takes knowing where to go to meet people you will like and click with.

Then there is the change of the old friends. Things are suddenly different. Nobody calls or writes. Distance starts to creep in. Not only am I lonely here trying to build new relationships but now I feel the old friends aren't as approachable either. It is a lonely place to be. Isolated.

I know from the past that time takes care of everything. In time I will make new friends and build relationships with those in my new area. In time the friends that I left behind will get used to the distance and we will be able to talk as we used to. But for now it is nothing but change. The lonliness from missing what was and the excitment of looking to what is and will be.

A true friend loves at all times. They will be there through thick and thin no matter the distance. So are those in my life true friends? Will they still be there when I need them? Or will they forget about me and go on with life without me? That is something only time will tell.

  1. I comment you, and it disappeared. Anyway, I love your writing, keep it up. I completely agree, a true friend loves at all times, not just during times of convenience.
